When you're pinned wide open in 30-degree heat or tackling 5 hours of gnarly trails, staying hydrated isn't optional - it’s essential. Whether you’re sending laps at the local MX track, conquering an enduro loop, or racking up the miles on your adventure rig, the right hydration pack makes all the difference to your ride.
Here I'll break down the things to look out for so you can ride harder, longer, and safer.
Your hydration needs depend on your riding style, duration, terrain, and the weather. Here's a quick guide:
With motocross track riding your typically doing shorter sessions but with max intensity, so you tend not to need extra storage or bulk.
Recommended bladder size: 1.5L
Potentially riding long hours in tough terrain, you’re more likely to burn through serious energy and find yourself sweating it out in all conditions. You probably end up a bit further away from your race base as well, so more capacity will be a bonus.
Recommended bladder size: 2L–3L
Adventures mean you could be out all day, sometimes days. Big mileage = big hydration needs.
Recommended bladder size: 3L+
We know you don’t just carry water. Snacks, tools, tubes, or even tech might need to be packed in to cover off emergencies, bike dings or punctures, so here’s what to look for based on your riding type:
You can generally get way with being lightweight and minimalist with just enough hydration and a snack, perhaps your phone too. You want to look out for a low-profile fit that allows for more aggresive movement.
Heading a bit further up the trail and away from base, we recommend you think about built-in tool rolls and a bit more storage space with secure pockets. We'd recommend carrying a range of small spares such as tyre levers, phone, and if you're not using mousses, you probably need to include some spare tubes. Quick-access compartments or pockets make for easy access when you’re on the move so you're not holding up your mates when grabbing a quick snack.
For longer days in the saddle, you really want to look out for large-volume packs with modular storage. You're probably going to need space for maps, layers, chargers, and more, but take into consideration you'll probably be carry other luggage on board as well.
You'll be thankful for weather resistant compartments too as longer rides inevitably mean more chance of riding through 4 seasons in the same day.

Look out for mesh backs to support good airflow. Insulated bite valves can help to keep your liquids cool and dust free, and a lightweight construction is always a bonus.
Weatherproof compartments keep your gear dry and an insulated hose sleeve will prevent freezing in winter. If there's room to stash a rain shell or extra base layer, you'll be well covered if the conditions change during your ride.
Keeping hydrated while riding is just as important as your right hand. We only carry gear we’d wear ourselves which is why our shelves are stocked with the best USWE hydration packs to match your style, or performance hydration packs from KTM or GasGas to match your wheels.
